The Medicare dates and savings programs people in Oklahoma actually use.
Plan details change every year. The calendar below is the one to memorize. If a date applies to you, Shannon and Dustin can look at your doctors and drugs before you act. Official rules live at Medicare.gov.
Annual Enrollment Period
October 15 through December 7. This is when most people with Medicare can join, drop, or switch a Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D drug plan. Coverage chosen during this window starts January 1. You do not have to change. If your plan still fits, staying is a decision.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
January 1 through March 31. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan. This window is not a free-for-all for people who only have a supplement.
Initial Enrollment Period
The seven months around the month you turn 65: three months before, your birthday month, and three months after. This is when you first enroll in Part A and Part B through Social Security, and when you choose a supplement or an Advantage plan. Your Medigap open enrollment is a separate six-month window that starts when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B.
Special Enrollment Periods
Certain life events open a chance to change plans outside those windows. A permanent move, losing employer coverage, and changes in Medicaid eligibility are common examples. A five-star Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, if one is available in your area, can create an extra opportunity. We confirm the window with your situation before anyone submits an application.
Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs
Extra Help, also called the Low Income Subsidy, can lower Part D premiums and drug copays for people who qualify based on income and resources. Medicare Savings Programs in Oklahoma, including QMB, SLMB, and QI, can help pay Medicare premiums and, in some cases, other cost sharing.
Some Medicare Advantage plans also include extra benefits such as dental, an over-the-counter allowance, or a Part B premium giveback. Those benefits depend on the plan and on eligibility. We will check what you might qualify for, and we will not describe an extra as guaranteed before we run your ZIP code and your income situation.
The Oklahoma Medicare Assistance Program, the state’s SHIP, gives free counseling and does not sell insurance. Call them at 1-800-763-2828, or call us if you want a licensed agent to compare plans afterward. Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) list every option, including plans we do not represent.
